Let me say this first! I am a big fan of Michael Gerber and I have purchased and read pretty much everything he has written about Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurs.  I have taken his teachings and applied them in my own business and seen very favourable results!

The first book I read was The E-Myth.  At first blush, the book appears to be telling you stuff that is practically intuitive!  It’s also a bit unnerving that it is oversimplified to the point that you feel that you’re being treated like a child (you know that feeling that someone is talking down to you or just being patronizing!).

I am all for using analogies but when business non-fiction starts reading like a soap opera (in this case it’s Sarah and her pies) the drama is a bit much.

Notwithstanding all of these reservations, I still recommend the lessons learned from this book to all my clients that are new entrepreneurs.  Here are some of the key messages from the book:

1. Just because you like something and are good at it does not necessarily mean you can make a good business ot of it.

2. A  business has multiple facets and requires more skills than just that brought by the technician.

3.  A thriving enterprise needs three kinds of personalities (and skillsets): (a) the Entrepreneur (b) the Manager, and (c) the Technician.

4.  Perhaps the most valuable lesson for me from this book was the “franchise” concept that needs to be brought into every business no matter how big or small it is and what product or service it offers.

Truth is, there really was not enough substance to justify a book!  All the useful points from this book can be captured in an effective one hour seminar!

Now there’s a thought….. :)
